Today, I was treated to an incredible lunch by my boss. Hailing from the sea-scented Dolsan Island in Yeosu, he has exceptionally high standards for seafood, so I was naturally excited when he led the way with such confidence.
I never dreamed that a place like this was hidden right next to my office, on a street I walk down every single day. It was a classic case of not seeing what’s right under your nose. As we descended a flight of stairs I’d always overlooked, a world completely different from the stark office buildings outside unfolded before us.
A Cozy Sanctuary Under Warm Lights

The interior of ‘Wando Daek’ was surprisingly cozy. Warm, soft lighting cast a gentle glow on the wooden tables, creating a calm and inviting atmosphere amidst the lunchtime rush. “It’s a great spot to come alone for a drink in the evening,” my boss remarked quietly. I could instantly picture the evening scene he described—the perfect place to find comfort in a warm meal at the end of a long day.
Looking at the well-curated menu, which seemed perfect for both lunch and dinner, I mentally planned my next visit. It felt like the ideal spot to unwind with a colleague over a glass of soju after work.
A Deep, Rich Flavor That Captivated My Palate

Soon, the star of our meal, the Galchi-jorim (braised cutlassfish), arrived with an array of neatly presented side dishes (banchan).
Thick pieces of cutlassfish were simmering beautifully in a bubbling, red sauce. The sauce was the true showstopper—it wasn’t just spicy but had a deep, rich, and savory flavor that coated the tongue. Taking a spoonful of rice, mixing it with the sauce, and topping it with a tender piece of fish was pure bliss. The soft radish, which had soaked up all the delicious seasoning, was another treat in itself.
Every single side dish was prepared with care, reflecting a genuine dedication to quality. From the main course to the accompaniments, it was a flawless meal.
I had been feeling a bit tired of the daily grind and the usual lunch options, but my meal at ‘Wando Daek’ was a delightful experience, like discovering a hidden jewel. Whenever I’m craving the warmth of a home-cooked meal in the heart of this busy office district, I know I’ll be coming back here without a second thought.
